Self-Reliance

1a. They realize the should follow what they believe and be who they really are and not like the rest of society.

1b. He says that envy is ignorance because people should be trying to be themselves and not be imitated. Imitation is suicide because if your not rich you imitated the rich if your not and you don't act like yourself.

2a. Society's request is conformity and instead they should strive self-reliance.

2b. He advocates nonconformist because he believes people should act as themselves rather then the rest of society. When he says to be nonconformist he is saying you should be yourself.

3a. You should fallow what you believe and can achieve great things and act not only alone but in front of the rest of society.

3b. He is saying that you should do what you want to show that your independent and show freedom and that it is easy to act alone so act how you want in front of society.

4a. They fallowed what they believed and achieved great things.

4b. Great people are sometimes inconsistent because their beliefs and ideas change daily because they aren't afraid to be different in front of society. He doesn't think consistency is important and you should say what you believe in front of society rather then alone.

5a. I agree with Emerson that is it better to rely on yourself on what you believe. If you state what you believe and fallow through with it you could achieve great things like the people in Emerson's piece. You could also figure out who you are rather then be like everyone else and not stand out to the world.

5b. I think they have the greatest impact on society because they aren't afraid to speak what they think and they could inspire other people to break free and fallow what they believe. They change society because they will do whatever they can to change society because they are passionate and if they have good ideas people will break free and listen. I think anyone who can inspire someone else to do what is right and what they want to do. Like a famous athlete, a doctor, the president, and anyone who can break a individual free from the rest of society.

  1. 1a. Each person, according to Emerson, comes to realize that "envy is ignorance" and that "imitation is suicide."
3a) "The independence of solitude" is the type of freethinking that one is forced to do when there is no one else to ask for advice. He believes that the conclusions you come to by yourself are most likely to be correct.

1b) Emerson would agree with you, that to try and live like you're rich might lead you to unhappiness and to dislike who you are, but he was discussing conformity to ideas about what to think.
